UMTS Fundamental

Provide the comprehensive overview of UMTS.
- Identify service offered by 3G
-  Outline process of 3G
- 3G Spectrum allocation
- Key features of air interface
- System architecture of 3G
- Scenario for deploying 3G system

Introduction to 3G System:

3G system represent the next step of cellular mobile communications systems. 3G system will start to be deployed from 2003 onward. It provide mobile data user with high speed rate.
3G Frequency allocation:
- Role of WARC
- Frequency allocation recommended
- FDD and TDD Mode
World Administration Radio Conference (WARC) in 1992 identify spectrum for 3G radio system in a common frequency band arround 2 GHz for both terrestrial and satellite components.
WARC is the international body that regulates the worldwide use of frequency spectrum.

3G system deployment:

3G System architecture:

UTRAN contains the following element:
1. Node B similar to GSM BTS: contains radio equipment to communicate with mobile device
2.  Radio Network Controller (RNC): similar to the GSM BSC: responsible for the managing radio resource.

UMTS Core contains: radio independent part and it responsible for call control and mobility management.

UMTS interface.

The UMTS system architecture is capable of supporting both GSM and evolved GSM network (eg. GPRS) alongside the 3G UMTS network.
